Ready Player One: the best science fiction novel I've read in a decade

Ready Player One: the best science fiction novel I've read in a decade
By Mark Frauenfelder at 10:42 am Monday, Aug 15

http://d.pr/WqKO (Read a PDF with the first three chapters of Ready Player One.)

It seems like every decade or so a science fiction novel comes along that sends a lightning bolt through my nervous system: Philip Jose Farmer’s To Your Scattered Bodies Go (1971). William Gibson’s Neuromancer (1984). Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash (1992). Cory Doctorow’s Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (2003). And I recently discovered what my mind-blowing novel for the 2010s is: Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One.

Cline’s first novel starts out in the year 2044. The Great Recession (the same one we are in right now) is in its third decade. Unemployment is higher than ever (there's a two-year wait for a job at fast food chain restaurants), liquid fuel is extremely scarce, the climate is in awful shape, and famine, disease, and poverty are rampant across the planet.

The story is told by Wade Watts, an 18-year-old orphan who lives with 16 other people in trailer near the top of a tall stack of trailers in a crowded, crime-ridden trailer park on the outskirts of Oklahoma City (the suburbs are deserted, because hardly anyone can afford to buy fuel to travel by car). He doesn’t remember his father, who was shot by cops who caught him looting a grocery store for food after a power outage. And his mother overdosed on adulterated drugs when he was a kid. Wade now lives with his hateful young aunt and her creepy, fresh-out-of-prison boyfriend. They allow Wade to live in the trailer only because he's worth a weekly ration of food vouchers.

Wade spends most of his time in an abandoned van in a nearby junkyard, where he uses his school-issued laptop to stay jacked-in to a Snow Crash-like metaverse called the OASIS, which was created in 2012 by a brilliant game programmer named James Halliday ("a nerd uber-deity on the level of Gygax, Garriott, and Gates"). Halliday's OASIS is used all day by everyone with access to a computer, and according to Wade, it changed "the way people around the world lived, worked, and communicated. It [transformed] entertainment, social networking, and even global politics. Even though it was initially marketed as a new kind of massively multiplayer online game, the OASIS quickly evolved into a new way of life."

I'm not spoiling anything by revealing that the reclusive Halliday dies early in the book (We learn that in the first paragraph). But before Halliday dies (of cancer) he announces to the billions of people who use the OASIS that he has created a treasure hunt inside the virtual reality universe. The first person to complete the quest (by finding three keys and retrieving a hidden Easter Egg) will inherit his entire fortune, valued at $240 billion, and will be placed in charge of the OASIS.

The contest is quickly dubbed The Hunt. Millions of egg hunters (“gunters”) devote every waking hour to solving the quest, either solo or in clans. The gunters study everything they can about the 1980s (which were the formative years of Halliday and important to solving the clues). The gunters become experts in the comic books, movies, music, science fiction and fantasy novels, movies, role playing games, and video games of the era.

Because the stakes are so high, people invest all their time and money to solving the riddles left by Halliday. An evil corporation called Innovative Online Industries —- which has long had designs on taking over the OASIS and ruining all that it good about it -— has an entire division (the Department of Oology) with thousands of employees looking for the egg.

But after five years of fruitless searching, interest in the contest fizzles. Only a few thousand diehard gunners, including Wade, continue The Hunt.

Then Wade finds the first key and the entire world goes batshit.

Wade's discovery sets the stage for the rest of the novel, a rollicking, surprise-laden, potboiling, thrilling adventure story that takes place both in the OASIS and the real world. It is loaded with geek-culture references from the 1980s that resonated strongly with me — but they are all integral to the story and never feel gratuitous. You don’t need to know about 1980s pop culture to appreciate the story. I loved every sentence of this book, and was a little sad when I reached the end and re-entered reality. Ernie sent me some advance reader copies of Ready Player One and everyone I gave a copy to told me they loved it. My friend John Park took it on a vacation and read it, and he was about to give it to someone who was interested in it, but decided to keep it so he could reread it again immediately! I'm going to reread it again myself.

The Party
We hold the 6th reincarnation of our superfun Dirty Motor series in that great warehouse space from last year (NOT the dance studio...) with all the art on the wall. These events are lively, sweaty and spontaneous, and the music is time-tested party music. People have been asking us each year to have another one, and this space is perfect for it. Big bass drops + over the top lyrics = wow!

Here are some photos and an article about the previous event:

http://www.nowtoronto.com/music/story.cfm?content=169178
http://www.nowtoronto.com/music/scene.cfm

The Space
This warehouse is home to our buddies Daniel, Thomas and 7 others! It's a spot tucked into the warehouse district of Sterling St. They are a great group of musicians and artists and their space is full of murals, found objects, bands and rehearsals. We're really happy to be working with them on this event and we think their place is lively enough for a proper Dirty Motor party. It's not a massive warehouse, so remember to get your tickets in advance because it can sell out. We are supplying extra washrooms in consideration of the ladies and for party comfort.

Btw, if you're interested in volunteering to help us decorate and set the space up, please reply to mdave@sympatico.ca.

BACK STORY ON THE NIGHT:

We've always had a ton of fun each year at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, and their Sunday features a Ghettotech/Booty House stage. It's regularly the best fun of the weekend with people losing it hard to music and there's always awesome breaking circles to check out to the fat electro. Big bass drops + over the top lyrics = wow!
So our idea was to feature Detroit sounds that no one is hearing here, and really make a party out of it.

At it's core the night will feature a Miami Bass, Detroit Booty House and Ghetto Tech set, but mixed in, the night features a nice blend of old skool Detroit electro tech (like Juan Atkins), likely with a quick mixing slightly banging fun style (like Jeff Mills), and some house too. We find that the minimal sort of Berlin sound we hear a lot of is cultured and sweet, but there are other types of techno that are simply pure raw fun. We want showcase that kind of fun and get our crazy on.

We'll see you at the party.

Also, coming up soon is Detroit's Electronic Music Festival and here’s where you can get more information on that: www.paxahau.com

Promise Cherry Beach Parties
We will be starting up our summer outdoor Sunday parties after we come back from the Detroit Festival in early june. Keep your eyes peeled for the updates.

Villagers - Becoming A Jackal by A Future Animal

http://www.dominorecordco.com/artists/villagers/
From the very first seconds of Becoming a Jackal, he’s got you. A faint drone of organ, joined by eerie strings and a cascade of piano that collectively casts a Hitchcock movie shadow before a hushed voice asks, “Have you got just a minute? / Are you easily led? / Let me show the backroom / Where I saw the dead / Dancing like children on a midsummer morn / And they asked me to join” – and then the music obliges by with a similar spectral sweep. ‘I Saw the Dead’ is not just the album intro of 2010 to date but also a magnificent intro to the vivid narratives, gripping poetry and melodic depth of Conor J. O’Brien – or as he likes to call himself and his cohorts, Villagers.

Check out the fully produced version of the track below:

Wash away 2009.

"Feel It All Around"
Washed Out slows down Gary Low's "I Want You" and keeps the listener asleep aboard a comfortable airliner or adrift in calming ocean waters — depending on your particular interpretation, of course. The song is indicative of both the artist's title and the song's as there is a tingly cleansing feeling experienced as the song progresses, never going anywhere in particular and never needing to.

And the aerator collar on your kichen faucet just spins or turns rather than loosening...
Then you need to feed a pair of needlenose pliers, scissors, or spoon into those notches to remove it.

It's going to be tough, turn to the left and it will eventually give.

Derrick Carter @ Cobra Dec 18

This was an awesome night and a great chance to get crazy with the low light settings on the new Canon s90. A little frustrating at times, and highlights a serious need for fundamentals training, but all in all an amazing last minute cap to my mental week.
Look closely for cameos by Jesse F. Keeler (of Mstrkrft/DFA1979) in the background of the first shot, and Miss Honey Dijon, who is booked at Footwork tonight for a SEVEN (7!) hour set. I could be wrong, but I think that's also CityLine's Tracy Moore in the crowd there too. She can get down!

Graffiti Taxonomy

http://evan-roth.com/graf_taxonomy/graf_tax_01.html
Graffiti Taxonomypresents isolated letters from various graffiti tags, reproduced in similar scales and at close proximity. The intent of these studies is to show the diversity of styles as expressed in a single character. In these photographs, the ‘S' is reproduced from photographs of tags taken in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, while the 'A' is reproduced from tags from Central Park North to 125th St. in Harlem.

This project is still in progress. I am currently seeking any leads for funding or from publications that would allow me to complete each letter of the alphabet from tags found throughout New York City. Please send any leads tofi5e@ni9e.com. Big thanks to all NYC writers, anyone who enjoys this project is really responding to the forms they have created.

A Boom Bap Continuum...

http://soundcloud.com/aboombapcontinuum/
"A Boom Bap Continuum... ten years of beats from '99 to '09"
2tall, Kper and DJ Clockwork present... A Boom Bap Continuum. A short history of a sound aesthetic... Hosted on SoundCloud.com
The intention behind this is simple: to highlight the lineage of hip-hop production and beat making from the turn of the millennium to the present day, and perhaps shed some light on the fairly quiet revolution that has been taking place under the surface of mainstream media in recent years.
With some strange tags being applied to the current standard in beat making, I feel it it is important to shed some light on to this lineage. This is a journey from late 90s crate digging, to the circuit-bent soundscapes of the so called ‘post-dilla’ era.
I hope this music inspires you as much as it has inspired me these past 11 years.

These days however, ever since adopting the Ghostbeard moniker, Jeff really just wants to play reggae, dancehall, jungle, dub-step, and all things ragga-related… Sure he's got other jams on hand and will swing that way if need be, but it's rare he has to… Having dealt with a wide range of classic reggae & dub labels at previous distribution jobs, been a buyer for some of the first jungle labels out of the UK, held down a reggae/dub night residency, and setting his credit card on fire every week with on-line dancehall 7" purchases, his collection runs deep and nerdy…but most importantly dancefloor rocking.

The Heavy - Sixteen

The Heavy: The House That Dirt Built
English-band, the Heavy, release their sophomore album, The House That Dirt Built. The band's debut album, Great Vengeance and Furious Fire, delivered gritty funk/soul but the band attempts to expand their sound on the follow up.
The Heavy combine the retro vision of the Coral, the grit of Electric Six, and the thematic elements of the Misfits.

THE SLEW

A couple of years back Eric San (aka Kid Koala) and Dylan J. Frombach (aka Dynomite D) were approached to soundtrack a new documentary feature film that was in production. Koala was already well known for his uncanny turntable manipulation, whilst Dylan had remixed Money Mark and collaborated with the Beastie Boys, amongst others. The duo worked for a long time on the psych rock-influenced score, only for the filming to collapse and any release to be canned. Although the film may never see the light of day, its music is about to be brought to life on stage

This Sat Nov14 -Skratch Bastid Presents...

Saturday, November 14th at Revival Bar in Toronto will be the first show in a series entitled SKRATCH BASTID PRESENTS. This will be a quarterly night based around mixing and matching musical styles and ideas while staying conscious of the party atmosphere. A collaborative DJ experience.

The first line-up features myself, Scratch (beatboxer from The Roots) and DJ Starting From Scratch. The DJs will be going on 4 turntables and Scratch will be live on the mic with his effects unit. Some of it will be mildly rehearsed, but for the most part it will be off-the-top and in response to the vibe of the room. Visuals will be provided by mixMotion, who will add an interactive visual aesthetic to the live performance.

Google Buys Gizmo 5

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/11/09/exclusive-google-has-acquired-gizmo5/

Within Google Voice you have the option to point your calls to either a real cell or wired line. In addition the service allows you to direct calls to a Gizmo5 line. This service is compelling for a few reasons.
1. Delivers calls via SIP to my cordless phone running on a Sipura VoIP ATA
2. Provides a backup line for outbound landline calls (with credit)
3. Allows you (at fee) to modify your outbound Caller ID to match my Google Voice number. This allows me to access callback services like MobiVox, Rebtel
4. It completes toll free numbers at no cost - so I can access my conference bridge and services like Google411 and ReQall.

Very interested to see what additional functionality Google brings to the game.

Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant (OLIVIA WILDE), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

Hour 2 welcomes back Saffrolla with another eclectic mix through the genres and bpms- sprinkling and mixing in tracks from Chromeo, Benga, The Qemists and a general assorted mish-mash of beats, from a record collection comprising of two decades of vinyl collecting
