Sony PSP video capabilities roundup

I have been a staunch supporter of portable personal video for eons, well before the technology was even close to ready. From the Game Gear TV adapter to the shitty Radioshack LCD tvs to most recently playback on the Sony PEGUX50. I simply cant understand why the last round of MP3 players didn't include multi-format playback as with Archos. While googling whether someone has hacked Sony's Location-Free Tv server to do something better than just "unusable" tv streaming, I came across the following links that talk about potential upgrades to allow for LFTv, VOD, and TV via PSP. cool.

Memory Stick TV Tuner: not specifically for PSP, but proof of concept.

Introducing QNext: Java Universal Messenger

"Our Universal Instant Messenger keeps you connected to all popular IM’s, you can also Talk Online anywhere around the world for free, host a live Video Conference or Transfer Files of any size with complete security. But the closer you look, the better it gets. Qnext allows you to create private, shared environments called Zones where invite other users to securely share your content and online services. A Zone can contain exciting services such as File Sharing, Group Text Chat, Qnext Photo and Live Online Games. And this is just the beginning – Qnext will be offering many new services to enhance your online experience. We have also included a powerful remote access service that gives you fast, easy and secure access to your computer from anywhere in the world using QnextMyPC."
Jaysay:I've been using this at the office, basically because Mr.Grimm refuses to use MSN. Plus it still supports "person is typing a message" indication for MSN. I was able to install it without admin rights. It apparently has advanced music streaming and video/audio conferencing features built in. As we are firewalled up the wazoo, when my wazoo gets onto the other network i'll try these features out. If anyone has a username on this let me know.
-also anyone tried using those pc drivers online to install a Sony Eyetoy as a webcam yet? They look so much cooler than most.

Yahoo / MSN / Decadence

It's been a busy few days at Yahoo. Their once-much-loved (see dead services POP, SMS, text-to-speech, free forwarding, free voicemail) free email service just announced that free users will be getting a disc quota of 1 Gig of storage. Paid users will be getting 2 Gigs. Gmail users will begin rolling eyes en mass.

Toronto's sproingy people invade the Guvernment / KoolHaus(Warehouse) /OrangeRoom (where I'll be).
Carl Cox, The Bassbin Twins, Evin Nine and Atomic Hooligan (& others) perform at Decadence.

oh and MSN also raised the maximum numner of contacts in Messenger to 300. Remind me to send a OMGLOLWTFBBQ, to my whole contact list 3 times tomorrow with news of same.

Yahoo BUYS Flickr! No.SERIOUSLY

0wnZ
from: Flickerblog

You're not going to become a bunch of suits?
No, no, no! The
precious DNA we've got -- that of the Ludicrew -- is on side and revving up for
building Flickr. Having the team building out the team's vision for Flickr has
been stressed as our number one priority, and keeping us around -- in spite of
our wiseassery, tomfoolery and tendency to hoot spontaneously -- is crucial for
preserving the Flickrness that is Flickr. They're not going to replace any
of us with suits, nor induce us to wear them. Lapel? I don't know what you mean.
Are you going to become Yahoo Photos?
No. Yahoo Photos will get a lot of
Flickr features, and there are alot of other areas around Yahoo that will also
be Flickrized where Flickrization would be good. Yahoo Photos and Flickr have
different kinds of users with different needs, and will remain separate for the
foreseeable future. Flickr would also suffer from a sudden deluge of
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg! so we're going to grow it carefully.

Comment from Yahoo's Jeremy Zawodny: http://jeremy.zawodny.com/blog/archives/004362.html

Jaysay:If you haven't noticed, pretty much every photo here is being served to j1.ca from Flickr. I honestly love the interface and features, I post maybe once or twice a week with the sophisticated art like robots and angry monkeys cartoons. I'm of course frightened of change (see Screensavers post below) but old Flickr Pro holders (me) are being eased into the change with promises of "super mega bonuses" for our early adoptive good faith. I'm just wondering if they'll be keeping the units seperate, how flickr will become a part of Yahoo 360? I'll update as this all shakes out....

Evil Nine on the BBC Essential Mix.

Last night, sadly we had to split before the Nines graced the stage at the 360 here in the Big Smoke. The full hand inky handstamp stares up as I type reminding me of such. Sigh...we are all pawns in the mighty Influenza's takeover.
Happily, the Evilest of Nines are on the Essential Mix this week. Study up novice, these mixers have much to learn ya.
http://snipurl.com/djmx
(note this is a permanent link to the EssMix, so if you check this in a week, you'll be hearing someone else)

-If you're looking for an MP3 of the above mix, perhaps you could read through this post from the lovlies on the Tribe board....

Screensavers killed...again

The Screensavers graced the airwaves of G4TV, formerly G4TechTv, formerly TechTv, formerly ZDTv....and now it doesn't.
The ad wizards behind the worlds most inane channel have decided to "revamp" The Screensavers and thus rename the show. Kevin Rose and wifey will still head up the program, with bitchface Kevin Pwhoever but henceforth it will be dubbed "Attack of the Show."
Brilliant. If I wasn't so painfully addicted to this tragedy of programming, I wouldn't mind so much, but I am, and I do and so I set my Snapstream for another (probably brief) round of recordings under the new moniker.
Dont suck.

Jaysay:This is creeping me out

Spike Lee spoke out.

The Ryerson Student's Council brought Mr. Spike Lee to Roy Thompson Hall last night. Nothing incredibly moving or mind shattering said by the littlest rich man I've ever met, but it was worth attending. Craziest moment happened during Question and Answer period...
A kid got up and asked the difference between depicting the struggles of the hood, versus exploiting the violence for box office sales. Spike requested a specific example. The guy noted some thought "Boyz in the Hood" was exploitative in this way. Out of the back of the theatre a voice screamed "I was going to ask that!"
Spike Lee then invited the voice to the stage. John Singleton, director of Boyz in the Hood then joined Lee onstage, responded to the question, and spoke about the inspiration Spike was to him him growing up.
Great great moment I felt priveleged to see.
A better review than I could write here. The event was especially nice having scored front row center seats from Ryerson.
As a writer-director, actor, producer, author and
philanthropist, Spike Lee has revolutionized the role of black talent in cinema.
Widely regarded as today's premier African American filmmaker Lee is a
forerunner in the do-it-yourself school of independent film. Lee's films, Girl
6, Get on The Bus, Do The Right Thing and Clockers display his ability to
showcase a series of outspoken and provocative socio-political critiques that
challenge cultural assumptions not only about race but also class and gender
identity. This speaking engagement will be followed by an exclusive Q&A
opportunity.

Max Weinberg saves the day for DFA 1979

Realvideo above. On Conan fri Toronto's own DFA1979 performed half of "Romantic Rights," then Mr.Grainger hops off the drums and Max Weinberg careens through the stage to fill out the rest of the song, catchinging his arm and bashing the cymbals with his coat for the first few bars. Rock n' roll.

Good vs. Evil, Web vs. TV

The Americanization of the beloved "Office." I love Steve Carell, but redoing scenes from the original with different actors? I sense horrid disaster. I'll be watching though.
http://www.nbc.com/The_Office/
bad.

Channel 101, "House of Cosbys" Channel 101 is a web based forum for short low budget films. Screenings are held monthly in LA and polls online and at events determine who gets cancelled and who rolls on to produce a new episode.

good.

Tragically hip live at the Mod Club. The new MSN beta doesn't allow you to kill the crap MSN today, but thankfully today, it actually had something useful.

http://www.theswitchboard.ca Java VoIP sans install

Jaysay: Tested ultra easy reg and login, no long intrusive subscriptions, fast load, no glitches. Close to the fidelity of Stanaphone, and possibly more convenient. SUBSCRIBE!
About http://www.theswitchboard.ca
Our plan is to create the easiest to use, free, browser to browser internet phone. How is the switchboard different from other internet phones?
-it does not run silently in the background using up resources
-it does not allow third party access to your computer
-it does not require any installation
Many other internet phones use your computer as a node in a vast computer network. This may seem like a good idea, except for the fact that they are using your bandwidth and CPU resources to route other people's calls through your computer. This means that even when you are not using these other internet phone applications they are still using you! Slowing down your computer, and your downloads. The switchboard only uses your internet connection and CPU when you are placing a call. Plus, when you leave the site the switchboard does not run covertly in the background. We are dedicated to preserving your computing privacy, thus our revenue streams will consist of advertising on the site, and licensing to other web sites, not utilizing your computer as a resource for other customers. Therefore, the switchboard will always be free for the individual user.

Minimum requirements: Java 1.4 enabled web browser, internet connection, microphone and headphones
Browser recommendations:Windows: IE, Mozilla; Mac: Safari ;Linux/Unix: Mozilla
upgrade to Java 1.5

Michal Levy "Giant Steps"

http://www.michalevy.com.nyud.net:8090/gs_download.html
Michal Levy
"Giant Steps"
Maya software, 2001, 2 min.

Levy translated John Coltrane's jazz standard into an animated visual--a geometric structure that stretches and careens to Coltrane's sax. In so doing, Levy illustrates the architectural thinking behind Coltrane's work, in which a musical theme defines a space.
Levy, who lives in Israel, created this short as a school project and did not get permission for the music.
